Protest on use of Pony in Transportation (India)

The Thane district(Maharashtra, India) has recently witnessed how service horses can be subjected to extreme cruelty. For those who are not aware of the news, these pictures talk louder than words. This pony was abandoned to die on the middle of the street after it met with a fatal accident in the bust street of Kalyan on August 31, 2009. PAWS (Plants & Animals Welfare Society) rescued this pony after receiving a call and immediately rushed her to Bombay SPCA to undergo treatment. Unfortunately she passed away on September 6, 2009.
All thanks to Bollywood actress Hema Malini who came forward appealing the Regional Transport Officer to ban the horse carts and instead provide the owners with auto rickshaw licenses to meet their livelihood. The injury on her body clearly states the amount of trauma she had to bear in the last days. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, it’s a punishable act to abandon any animal when it’s sick or old. This is a wake-up call for every NGO to stop this practice of using horses as a means of transportation.
All of us are aware of the fact that horses are continuously latched with hunter in order to make them run faster on the streets. As a matter of fact horses cannot run faster on concrete and cement roads and very often meet with an accident. Till date Kalyan has remained a shameful example of seeing many such cases. Many horses and ponies are abandoned on the street to feed on garbage when they are not found to be useful.
I request everyone to write a very strong letter of protest to the following governing bodies. Alternatively, you can also email them on the following email addresses.
Let’s join hands together and erase this age old practice of using horses as a means of transportation.
